Climate change and marine habitat recovery

Warming water moves the goalposts of restoration. How to plan for the conditions a site will have, not the ones it had.

A moving baseline

Restoration often aims at a historical reference. Under warming seas, the species that thrived at a site decades ago may no longer be the best choice for the next decades.

Planning for change

  • Use projections of temperature and heatwaves when choosing sites.
  • Favour genetic diversity in restoration material.
  • Monitor long enough to see the effect of extreme years.

Restore for the sea that is coming, using what we learnt from the sea that was.
