Costing Excel Workbook Draft

A draft Excel workbook that lets restoration practitioners estimate project costs ex-ante or track them ex-post, breaking costs down by restoration phase. Built on the D4.1 cost database and the Task 4.2 Cost Assessment Framework.

Content

Building on the marine ecosystem restoration cost database collated under D4.1, the Cost Assessment Framework developed in Task 4.2, and past studies (e.g. Bayraktarov et al. 2015, Scott et al. 2021) and sister projects such as CLIMAREST, REDRESS and MERCES, this Excel workbook allows restoration practitioners to estimate their project costs ex-ante, or keep track of them ex-post, across all stages of a restoration project.

The workbook includes basic instructions, a worksheet to describe the restoration scenario, and a timeline worksheet where the user marks the main project phases and their start and end months. Three main costing worksheets then break costs down by restoration phase — pre-deployment, deployment and post-deployment — calculating each activity using labour, vessel, equipment/capital, consumables and administration cost categories, with an overhead estimated as a percentage of labour. A final worksheet automatically summarises the total cost of each phase.
